DescriptionAs the commemorations of the 100th anniversary of WW1 draw to a close, the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge appears on the horizon.
The province of Liège bears the marks of both world wars.

Share the experience of discovering these sites as a group, fostering remembrance and reminding us how lucky we are to leave in the peaceful Europe of today.

ProgrammeDay 1: Hermalle-sous-Argenteau / Liège (B)
Maison du souvenir (Hermalle-sous-Argenteau): discover the work of the Red Cross and the health service during both world wars.
Boat trip to Liège and meal. 
Guided tour of the centre of Liège, from the Chartreuse to Robermont Cemetery.
Anthisnes: meal and tasting of Belgo-Russe 14-18 beer, created in tribute to the Belgian expeditionary force of WW1.
Accommodation at Hotel Husa (Liège).
 
Day 2: Barchon / Spa (B)
Fort de Barchon: after falling into the hands of the Kaiser's army on 8 August 1914, this fort was upgraded and rearmed during the occupation and interwar period, before facing German forces on 10 May 1940.
Meal at Beaux-Mont farm (Herve).
Remember museum 39-45 (Thimister-Clermont) + Henri-Chapelle Cemetery: discover the objects left behind by the 110 soldiers of the American 1st Infantry Division.
Tour and tasting at the Darcis chocolate museum.
Meal and accommodation at the Silva Hotel (Spa).
 
Day 3: ... / Malmedy / Spa (B)
Spa: the establishment of Germany's General Headquarters in Spa during WW1, the abdication of Wilhelm II and the Spa Conference on war reparations are just some of the key international events that have made this town a key historical landmark. Discover Spa through the eyes of a soldier from the era.
Meal at Val d'Arimont (Malmedy).
Baugnez 44: this museum tells the devastating story of the famous Baugnez/Malmedy massacre, in which 84 American prisoners were killed by the troops of SS-Obersturmbannführer Peiper on 17 December 1944.
Meal and accommodation at the Silva Hotel (Spa).
 
Day 4: Rocherath / Liège (B)
Hasselpath (Rocherath): this memorial site explores the remains of foxholes and forest bunkers (field hospitals, etc.) occupied by German and American troops. Consecrated on 13 May 2000 in the presence of American and German veterans. A symbol of peace and reconciliation that knows no boundaries.
Tour and dinner at Val-Dieu Abbey (Aubel).
Return to Liège: trip to the Cointe Inter-Allied Memorial.
Les Territoires de la Mémoire: this permanent exhibition depicts the journey of deportees sent to Nazi concentration camps.

Visitors are led through spaces exploring one of the darkest chapters of our collective history.

1 - Avouerie d'Anthisnes

Located in the ancestral home of the Avoués d'Anthisnes knights, the Museum of Beer and Peket will tell you everything you need to know about the site's history and its very local drinks. The tour ends in the castle's vaulted cellars with a tasting of Belgo-Russian beer, created in tribute to the Belgian expeditionary force of WW1, which the manager will tell you all about.

17 December 1944, the Battle of the Bulge begins following Hitler's "Wacht am Rhein" counteroffensive. Conflict looms. This museum tells the devastating story of the famous Baugnez massacre, in which 84 American prisoners were killed by the troops of SS-Obersturmbannführer Peiper.

A fascinating museum housed in a renovated barn exhibiting objects left behind by the 110 soldiers of the American 1st Infantry Division who rested at Mr Schmetz's farm, alongside artefacts donated by veterans. A small and simple museum that offers a big welcome and lots of originality.

This permanent exhibition depicts the journey of deportees sent to Nazi concentration camps. Quickly, we see how impossible it is to stop. Visitors are led through areas that explore one of the darkest chapters in our history, introducing the Second World War, the rise of Nazism, concentration and extermination camps, and witness accounts and stories of survival following captivity.
